Spaceship Office

Decorating my home office in the hopes of achieving my dream of owning a spacefaring vehicle
Every spacefaring creature deserves a proper cockpit. Mine just happened to be a spare room with plain walls and a very ordinary ceiling.

Charting the course
It started, as most of my projects do, with a sketch. I wanted the room to feel less like an office and more like the inside of a ship drifting through deep space.

What I didn’t plan for was the months and moolah spent in trial-and-error: undoing and redoing neck-cramping DIY work, hauling home liters of paint, fighting shiny syndrome and doing my best not to splurge on those absolute gems the entire DIY kingdom raved about that I’ll never use more than once, and scouring YouTube for videos to see whether someone else had the crazy idea of painting their ceiling a fancy fresco of whirling galaxies.
Mission log
- Watch various Sci-Fi TV shows, anime, movies for ideas.
- Yards and yards of painter’s tape.
- Paint the walls - then repaint 3 of them a completely different color six months later because I changed my mind!
- Wrap the walls with protective sheets because I did things in the wrong order and decided I wanted to paint the ceiling.
- Install overhead compartments like those in trains or planes because I thought I did not spend enough hours already craning my neck.
- Shoot at the sky with spray paint, which I dared myself into despite never having held a can before.
Space Walk
Like all my other one-shot projects that resulted from an intense session of hyperfocusing, 4 hours one evening cumulated to the remnants of The Big Bang.

The crew
No ship is complete without its crew. Kiwi, my cat, supervised every step of the mission. Or so he tried.. (less oxygen in space, he said).

It’s been almost 2 years renovating and I am proud to say I’m the owner of a 9 sqm. spaceship with.. PLANTS, CURTAINS, AND A MOON-TEXTURED RUG.
(totally not a fire hazard risk)
